CAREER


Angus Macmillan Douglas was raised near Glamis in Scotland and was employed for 33 years by British Petroleum plc in roles including Chief Executive of BP East Africa, Commercial Manager for BP Gas in Europe and Director of External Affairs for BP Group. 

On retirement from BP, he took up post as Director of the Scottish Blood Transfusion and Tissue Service and held associated roles as Chairman of the UK Co-ordinating Group of Blood Services, founder Director of the European Association of Blood Services and Director of the Common Services Agency of NHS Scotland.

After retiring from the NHS, Angus Macmillan Douglas started with Martin Gorham, OBE, a management consultancy, which specialised in healthcare projects in continental Europe, Russia and US. Projects included management of three EU public health projects, sponsored by the European Commission.

Angus Macmillan Douglas is married with two children and lives near Forfar.


NHS Scotland
Director of the Scottish Blood Transfusion and Tissue Service (SNBTS). Responsible for leading a major modernisation of the service, which involved improving productivity in some areas and reinvesting the savings to improve safety and introduce new services. SNBTS took a leading position in developing stem cell and tissue programmes and linked with Universities in UK and overseas.

Helped establish and served as Chair of the Forum of UK blood and tissue services. Helped establish the European Blood Alliance that facilitated, inter alia, benchmarking of performance across the European Economic Area.

Director of Support Services Scotland, an NHS agency that provided central business and some clinical services to the NHS in Scotland.

Member of the Advisory Board of the Agency that assisted NHS Scotland exploit its intellectual property globally. Examples of projects were modernising the Taiwanese blood service and providing remote nurse education to Egyptian health service.
Member of the Advisory Board to the Biotechnology division of Scottish Enterprise.


BP Career


Director of international political affairs for BP Group and political advisor to BP board – responsible for identifying political issues that could have a significant impact on the reputation and performance of the company and working with others to develop strategies for managing them.

Director of relationship management for BP half of the BP/Mobil refining and marketing partnership in Europe. This partnership involved some £15bn turnover in 25 European countries.

Managing Director of BP Tanzania and Director of BP Africa. Responsible for a company that was the leader in supplying petroleum and solar products across the region.
Manager for new developments for BP Gas in Europe and a member of the BP Gas management board. Negotiated long-term gas supply contracts for customers in continental Europe and UK.

Assistant UK Co-ordinator for BP Group. Helped develop a strategy for the Group in the UK which optimised the combined positions of the exploration, refining, marketing and petro-chemicals businesses. 

Employee relations officer at Grangemouth oil refinery in Scotland and Hound Point storage and shipping facility for the first North Sea oil production from the Forties field.

Founding Director of this management consultancy. Some of the main contracts have been for:

German Red Cross – gaining EU public health funding for and leading 3 year projects into improving quality standards for blood and tissue services across Europe;
German Red Cross – gaining EU public health funding for and leading a 3 year project into increasing the capacity of healthcare regulation and standard setting across Europe.

Jamaican Cabinet Office – recommending the organisation, budgetary requirements and training of staff for Jamaica’s public health laboratories.

Novartis – reviewing the potential of a possible take-over target.
Novartis – carrying out market research and recommending a strategy for introducing a new product into the European market.

Caridian (now Terumo BCT) – carrying out a review of the Russian healthcare and regulatory system and recommending a strategy for market expansion.
Caridian (now Terumo BCT) – carrying out a review of the company’s European Middle East and Africa markets and making recommendations for future strategy.

Cerus – carrying out periodic reviews of its marketing strategy in Europe and recommending changes. Developing blood service and hospital costing systems that allow the full costs and cashflow effects of introducing new technology to be shown simply.

South London Primary Healthcare Trust – reviewing the organisation and performance of community nursing and recommending changes.

Russian Blood Transfusion Society – working with the client to share good practice from both within the Russian Federation and abroad. Facilitating foreign experts to speak at major Russian conferences.
